Besides his command of words and his broad spectrum of sounds, from Rap to R&B to Dance, Tinie Tempah persuades also with fantastic featurings of international superstars. For SWISS, he compiled an eclectic musical mix and told us a bit more about himself and his amazing work.
Where does the name “Tinie Tempah” come from?
I literally just went through a thesaurus with a mate, we looked under anger and saw temper. I thought I should put something in front of that and Tinie Tempah came to me. I went out to the playground, age 14 that day, and was like “don’t call me Patrick anymore, I’m Tinie Tempah from now on”.
How did it all started with you becoming an artist?
When I was twelve years old, the wish came up to become an MC. Back then, the So Solid Crew shot a music video next to my place. When I saw them doing it, I knew that this is exactly what I want to do with my life. You have done many featurings with famous artists like Kelly Rowland, Swedish House Mafia or Ellie Goulding. How do such collaborations start?
Such collaborations always came naturally to me. For example, I met Swedish House Mafia at a festival, the chemistry was instantly creative and organic and then we decided to record a song together.
Your massive debut single “Pass Out” went straight to No. 1 in the UK. How did it feel?
It was unbelievable. I was not prepared to be so much in the center of attention all of a sudden. But of course it was a fantastic acknowledgement for all the work done and gave me lots of confidence.
After your album was also very successful and you just won two Brit Awards. When did you feel that you made it?
To a certain degree, it still doesn’t. You can be here today and gone tomorrow. I’m always trying to keep going and improve my work in a fast moving pop industry, hoping that people will also like my music in the future.
Have you got any favourite locations to perform?
There are many, I love to perform in vivid places like Ibiza, Dubai or Lebanon.
What is your most favourite destination?
This is totally New York. To me, this city already feels like a second home.
What do you always bring with you while travelling?
My laptop, headphones, Ray Ban sunglasses, watch and my iPod.
What is typically English about Tinie Tempah?
Basically everything. My humour, my lyrics, my style or that I like to drink tea. What insider tip of London would you give our passengers visiting your hometown?
I’d recommend the following venues: Bars in Shoreditch, Bricklane on a nice Sunday, the Exmouth market, the Royal Greenwich Observatory or the London Eye.
What are your next plans? I will be performing at the famous “Coachella Festival” (USA) and the “V Festival (UK). For late summer, I am planning to release my second album.
